The ZTE Nubia N1 Lite smartphone is a budget new product. Nubia N1 - Specifications Information about the navigation and location technologies supported by the device

I was afraid of substitution

When picking up the parcel from the post office, I was surprised that it was quite light. And this despite the fact that the smartphone has a 5k battery. Suspicion crept in that the phone had been replaced. Six months ago I already had a negative experience when I ordered two Letv x600s, and a Doogee x5 and some other noname arrived. Then there was NL mail and now. At home I unboxed the camera, you never know – everything is fine. The treasured Nubia letters on the smartphone box reassured me. Opened it. The equipment is standard: cable, charging, documentation, a needle for removing the SIM card slot, and the smartphone itself.

Without the “WOW!” effect

There were no disappointments, but in my heart I wanted to see a “fairy tale”, although I understood that there would be no miracle in Nubia for $240. First thought: “looks like Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro.” He turned it over and over in his hands. I think no. This one is better. The signature red circles on the front (the home touch button) and around the camera do their job. The phone is quite heavy. The front has 2.5D glass, chrome edging around the screen. Bottom: The speaker is on the right, but the slots in the case are symmetrical on both sides of the USB Type-C port. The cover is non-removable metal, with plastic strips on top and bottom, most likely so as not to jam the antenna signal. There is: a camera, a single-color flash, a fingerprint scanner and the Nubia inscription at the bottom in dark gray paint. Damn, is it so difficult to squeeze out these letters instead of drawing them? Come on…

The device booted up and the quality of the display immediately caught my eye. I immediately recognized the better quality screen, since I had a Nubia Z5s Mini several years ago. Deep blacks, good rich color rendering and contrast. Yes - it's Nubia. It looks like the matrix here is from Sharp/JDI.

Shell

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0 OS with the proprietary nubia UI 4.0 shell. Everything is smooth, without freezing. There is no application menu; they are all installed on the main screen. You can choose Russian or Ukrainian languages, as well as many others. Russian is translated more fully than Ukrainian, but the translation of the latter is sufficient for comfortable use.

There is a Play Market out of the box - this is good, since the smartphone is for the Chinese market. Installed applications from Nubia neoShare, App Center, Theme Manager, nubiaShop, nubia Park. They are sewn in, they cannot be cut out without Root rights. There are also about two dozen applications, which are popularly called “Chinese”. They can be removed without problems. The quick menu (curtain) is standard for Android smartphones. Also, if you swipe left from the desktop, upgraded photography effects functions for the camera will be available.

Interesting things and features

The Nubia N1 smartphone has an interesting menu item “Surface Movement”. In it you can enable the function of controlling the device with its extreme edges. For example, I tapped twice on the upper left side and went back one step. Or swiped along the right side - raised/lowered the brightness. You can use different gestures to launch applications, take screenshots and take photographs. Very comfortably.

There is also an advanced function for screen screenshots and screen video recording. Screenshots can be made curly, you can adjust the square and screenshot the entire page from bottom to bottom. Screen video recording quality is adjustable. I liked this because everything is there right out of the box and you don’t need to look for a suitable program.

Now let's move on to the comments. When connecting, the firmware update immediately arrived. But it could not be installed. It says there is no space on the SD card, lol. And this despite the fact that the device has 64 gigabytes of built-in memory. That is, to update you need a memory card in your phone. Another problem is the inability to delete or add another Google account. There is a solution. You need to add and delete through the Gmail application.

Another drawback is the speaker. It works very mediocre. It's enough for a call, but listening to music through it is not very good.

I would like to note the work of the scanner. Reads very quickly.

Camera

There is no miracle. Although maybe I’m comparing from photos from many top smartphones and am not entirely objective. Overall the photos are good. In insufficient lighting it becomes soapy. Photos taken in the evening want to be the best.

But the front camera takes fairly high-quality photos. This is what you need for selfie lovers.

Front camera pictures:

The camera interface has sections: “Family Camera” with a set of effects that are available by swiping from the main screen, Time-lapse, PRO, Photo, Video, SLO-MO, Panorama. PRO mode has advanced functions for photo adjustments. Interestingly, photographs can be taken by tapping and focusing on a particular element. The device focuses and takes photos automatically.

Bottom line

Calls, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G work great and without any complaints, so I didn’t stop at these functions.

I liked the smartphone. The quality of the display, 64 built-in memories, and a fairly capacious battery (5000 mAh), which is not often found in smartphones of top brands of this form factor, are captivating. The autonomy of the smartphone is very high. Considering that the Nubia N1 cost me $145, for that kind of money you can use it without worry. At the time of writing, the price of the device is about $230.

ZTE has announced a new mobile phone, which interested us primarily due to its battery life. Today, almost every mid-range or even flagship product has a small but very unpleasant problem - the battery only lasts for a day. That is, in the morning you unplug it from the charger, and in the evening you need to put the gadget back, since the battery cannot withstand active use. The ZTE Nubia N1 smartphone should not have such problems - the manufacturer installed a 5000 mAh battery here and this should be enough even for those who want to play modern shooters online. Although, of course, in this case the phone will be discharged within six hours. Today we will take a closer look at this gadget and decide for ourselves whether it is worth the money and whether the large battery is enough to attract consumers. Still, there are a lot of options on the market with similar advantages that are not popular.

Filling

The performance of the mobile phone is based on a processor called MediaTek Helio P10. This is a new model, you should have seen it in mid-range smartphones, the processor is built on a 64-bit architecture and runs on eight computing cores with a clock frequency of 2.0 gigahertz. I hope everyone understands that this smartphone will be able to run any game that you can find on the Internet on Android. We won’t even talk about high-definition films and other entertainment things, and everything is clear. The performance of the mobile phone will be supported by 3 gigabytes of RAM. This is enough to ensure that your smartphone does not experience any problems with applications running in the background. You can store personal content on the built-in 64 GB drive; if this is not enough for you, you can install a memory card of the same capacity.

Case design

The smartphone is available in two body colors - silver and gold. It is worth noting that many on the network have found a lot of similarities between this product and the iPhone mobile phone. On the front panel, which by the way is white, there is only a touch-sensitive Home key, a display, a camera and a speaker with sensors. The back side merges with the side faces, there are two dividing stripes. There is also the main camera, which protrudes slightly from behind the body, a flash, a fingerprint sensor and the company logo. It looks expensive, but it actually reminds me a little of the iPhone 6.

Bonuses

A huge advantage of the smartphone is its display - with a diagonal of 5.5 inches, its resolution is 1920 by 1080 pixels, the matrix is built using IPS technology with wide viewing angles and realistic color reproduction. We should also praise the 13 megapixel camera with excellent video quality. Nowadays this is a rather important function, since everything is filmed in large volumes. The smartphone, by the way, runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system with the proprietary Nubia UI 4.0 shell - the manufacturer still does not dare to abandon its proprietary appearance.

Bottom line

Now let's talk about the cost of a mobile phone. For 250 bucks you get a completely modern gadget with a powerful processor that can easily handle any task, enough RAM, a high-quality display and camera, a modern operating system and the ability to use all these advantages for a long time. You won't be able to find something similar from LG or Samsung, keep that in mind. So the smartphone has a very clear chance of success.

Battery capacity is never enough, all users of the voracious Android know this. That's why many manufacturers began to equip their gadgets with 3000 and even 4000 mAh batteries. But sometimes this is not enough, for example, Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with a platform based on MT6795 Helio X10 and a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, worked for only a few hours with the screen turned on. New ZTE nubia N1 also received the Mediatek platform and a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display, but the problem of autonomy in this phone is solved: it is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery.

Design

There are two design options available: silver and gold. Some will say that the overall design is similar to Apple’s, but considering how often various manufacturers borrow design elements from the sixth generation of iPhones, the smartphone can be compared with Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Meizu m3 note. Although there are no obvious similarities here, rather a general trend.

Typical for most devices is a white front panel, a back side that merges with the side edges, dividing stripes, and a row of large holes for speakers at the bottom. And, of course, a pleasant matte sheen, characteristic of all expensive smartphones in recent years. In something ZTE numbia n1 even self-sufficient: probably with a red border around the camera and a red circle on the home key. These elements have already become branded for ZTE.

Technical capabilities

This 5.5-inch phablet runs on Mediatek Helio P10 with four two-gigahertz and four one-gigahertz cores. The Mali-T860MP2 is responsible for the video component. Considering the fairly productive platform, the manufacturer did not spare both the RAM, which is 3 gigabytes, and the permanent memory capacity of 64 gigabytes. In addition, the device has an expansion slot for microSD cards.

As for photographic capabilities, both the main and front cameras have a resolution of 13 megapixels, which cannot but please selfie lovers. In addition, the gadget is equipped with a fingerprint scanner that can be used to unlock your smartphone. Considering all these features, the phone will indeed appeal to most discerning buyers on a budget. Among well-known brands, it is not worth looking for solutions with a similar platform. Do not also forget that in addition to the interesting design and productive hardware, the buyer also receives the sixth Android with the proprietary Nubia UI 4.0 shell.

Hi all!
Today the review will be devoted to a new smartphone from ZTE, or more precisely from its sub-brand Nubia. The announcement of this model took place back in February 2017 at the MWC 2017 exhibition, and it became available to buyers a little later, in March. The new Nubia N1 Lite belongs to the budget segment with all that it implies. It has the following features: 5.5-inch screen with 2.5D, 3000 mAh battery, fingerprint scanner, two SIM cards, support for 2G/3G/4G networks, etc. We’ll talk more about this and everything else later in the review.

This is my first acquaintance with phones from ZTE and Nubia in particular, so I have neither positive nor negative experience from using their devices yet. I couldn’t find detailed reviews or normal information about the device on the Internet; there is also no page on the 4pda forum. I’ll have to figure it out on my own, I hope I won’t miss important points in the review and will cover the topic completely. Well, let’s start our acquaintance with N1 Lite by studying the technical characteristics declared by the manufacturer:

Packaging and delivery
The parcel was sent by Singapore Post and reached me without incident in 18 days. A completely standard white package arrived, the contents inside were wrapped in several layers of protective bubble wrap. I didn’t take pictures of all this; I don’t think there’s anything interesting here. Along with the phone, the seller also sent a simple silicone case.

The device is delivered in a small white box made of thick cardboard, which, by the way, was sealed in film. Those. No one had touched the contents before me. On the front side of the box we are greeted with the Nubia brand logo.

On the back you can find very brief technical features of the product and other information.

There is nothing special or outstanding in the kit. Still, we must not forget that our model is a budget one and the manufacturer must save on everything. The following can be found in the box:
- The phone itself,
- microUSB charging cable,
- Charger,
- User manual and warranty card.
Unfortunately, there are no simple headsets or headphones; they are increasingly rarely included with the phone.

The charger has a European plug, so you don't have to bother with adapters. Judging by the characteristics at the output we have 5V/1.5A, I’ll tell you straight out that it’s not enough. A quick verification test showed that in reality this is the case - 1.5A; if you load it with a slightly higher current, the voltage immediately drops to an unusable 3.3V. Considering that the declared battery capacity is 3000 mAh, the phone will not charge quickly, and there is also no support for fast charging.

The included cable is only 70 cm long and carries a charge current of 1.5A from the original charger without any significant voltage drops. It is suitable for use, but can be replaced if desired; a good cable can now be bought at a fairly affordable price.

Appearance
Next, let's look at the phone itself. Taking it out of the box, we see that it is completely covered with protective and shipping films. We immediately get rid of them, because they will interfere with the normal use of the gadget.

And of course, don’t forget to remove the film from the main camera’s eye!

Looking at the device, you can immediately understand that we have another black rectangle in front of us. The design is not original, quite familiar to modern smartphones, and lacks any unusual features or features. The body is made of black matte plastic, the structure of the surface is similar to sandpaper. In addition, on the front side you can see a thin golden metallic edging. I hope the paint will not come off from it, as happens with many other devices of different brands (in particular, Samsung). The dimensions of the smartphone are as follows: length 153.1 mm, width 77.4 mm and thickness 8.5 mm. The weight is 172.9 g. In principle, it’s normal to hold the phone in your hand, except that the width is not entirely comfortable. Due to the fact that the surface of the plastic is rough and the edges are not rounded, but flat, the device does not tend to fall out or slide off. What can’t be said when wearing it in a silicone case, in the summer your hands sweat and the slippery case just wants to slip out of your hands.

The front side is occupied by a 5.5-inch HD display, a selfie camera with a 5 MP flash, light and proximity sensors, a light indicator and a speaker. There are no physical or touch buttons, the bottom part is just empty space.

The indicator is made in the form of a small luminous point, when charging up to 90% it lights up red, from 90 to 100% the color changes to green. It also signals that the battery is low; at 15% it starts to glow red, thereby informing us that the device needs to be recharged. And when you receive notifications, no matter what, be it SMS or messages from social applications, it blinks green.

The back side, as already mentioned, is completely plastic. It does not pick up fingerprints or other stains, which is undoubtedly a plus for the N1 lite model. There is a Nubia brand logo.

It also houses an 8-megapixel main camera, a dual flash, a fingerprint sensor or otherwise a fingerprint scanner, as well as a hole for a second microphone and a main speaker grille.

On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button. They press easily, the stroke is short and soft. The left side is devoid of any interfaces.

The top edge is occupied by a single headphone input, a 3.5 mm audio jack. This is the location of the audio jack that I like best. On the bottom you can find a microUSB charging input and a microphone hole.

The back cover can be removed by hooking it on the lower right edge.

Firstly, slots for SIM cards are hidden under it. The phone supports two micro SIM cards, and only one of them, any of your choice, can be used as Internet access and 3G/4G support. After we assign the SIM card as the main one, the second one will work only in 2G mode. There is also a separate slot for a microSD memory card. The manufacturer claims support for up to 32 GB, but in reality the smartphone easily coped with a 64 GB card. There may be support for larger ones, but I didn’t have any in stock. I note that two independent slots for SIM cards and a memory card are the second significant plus; for some reason many manufacturers make a combined slot, thereby limiting the choice of either two SIM cards, or one, but with a memory card. And here we can take full advantage of all the “benefits”, especially since there is support for hot measurement of both)).

Having removed the back cover, we can also see that the battery is non-removable, its capacity is stated as 3000 mAh. I'll try to find out if this is true, but a little later.

The case that the seller included separately fits the phone perfectly. All the holes for microphones and sockets are there, and there are also specially made hard buttons at the end.

Display
Nubia N1 Lite is equipped with a display from Sharp, with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels and a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Made using IPS, 2.5D technology and does not have an air gap between the matrix and the sensor (OGS). The pixel density is 267ppi, which many will say is not enough for such a large screen, but during practical use, no graininess was noticed with the naked eye. Pixels, of course, can be seen if you really want to, but this is not a FullHD display. The brightness margin is decent, as is the readability of the screen in general. In the daytime, under the sun's rays, the picture on the display fades, but you can still discern what's on it.

Viewing angles are maximum, color rendition is not distorted except when looking at the screen at a diagonal angle. Then the colors are slightly inverted into cold or warm tones. You can see this clearly in the photo below.

The screen is not deprived of a good oleophobic coating; fingerprints are easily erased. The test with a drop of water was successful; it does not spread across the screen, but rolls across it without leaving any traces. Everything seems to be fine, but there is also a fly in the ointment in this barrel of honey, this is the lack of a protective layer. The surface of the display can easily be scratched if you carry the phone in your pocket for a couple of days with change and other junk. It would be better if the seller put in a protective film or glass instead of a silicone case.

Multi-touch for 10 touches, which is not bad at all for a budget employee. And in addition to the standard image settings, there is an additional feature called MiraVision. Allows you to customize the image displayed on the screen in more detail to suit your needs, or use existing profiles.

Example with dynamic contrast disabled and enabled.

Communications and wireless interfaces
The smartphone supports 2G, 3G and 4G networks. The frequencies are European, including those used in Russia for 4G Band 20 and Band 40. This is not surprising, since the device has global firmware and is aimed at the European market.
Supported frequencies:
4G: FDD TDD-LTE Band 1/3/7/5/8/20/40
3G: WCDMA 850/900/2100MHz
2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
The connection is kept confidently, I did not notice any problems while using the phone, the interlocutor heard me well, as did I. The speaker volume is at an average level. I don’t know what this is connected with, but Nubia keeps the 4th generation network better than my main phone, where Xiaomi mi4S switches to 2G Nubia N1 Lite continues to work in 4G.

The Wi-Fi module only works with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz. Signal reception did not raise any questions, if compared with other devices it catches it at approximately the same level.

Only one type of global positioning is available for navigation - GPS. In open areas it catches about 8-10 satellites. The cold start took about 2 minutes, subsequent navigation starts were accompanied by a faster search for satellites. During the test trip, communication with them was not lost. At the window in a closed room, of course, fewer satellites are seen; in my case there were 7-8 of them. There is a magnetic compass. In addition, there is Bluetooth version 4.1 and FM radio.

OS and interface
The device runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system with the proprietary Nubia Ui 3.0 graphical shell. The OS version is still current, but not the latest, as is the graphical shell. In appearance, this is practically a naked android; the shell acts, as it seems to me, as a kind of theme. At the time of writing this review, no updates were found; it is not known whether they will be available at all. Out of the box there is support for the normal Russian language, no untranslated places or Chinese were noticed.

Stock applications from android 6.

The Music, Voice Recorder, Radio applications are also standard without visual changes. The rear speaker has an average volume and does not wheeze when listening at maximum volume. But the sound quality itself is a C grade, the sound is flat and somehow metallic.

The fingerprint scanner settings look pretty standard. Before assigning a fingerprint to unlock the screen, you must set a password, PIN code or pattern. After this, a menu opens with adding fingerprints, of which you can save five different ones. In addition, in addition to the standard screen unlocking function, a fingerprint can be assigned to any file or application. When you launch such a file or application, a window will appear asking you to enter a code or raise your finger to unlock. The fingerprint scanner works very quickly, the response time is less than a second. The percentage of successful unlocks is 8 out of 10, which I think is a good result.

Among the interesting functions I can note is the ability to set the time to turn on and off the smartphone, as well as Turbo mode. When this mode is turned on, both Wi-Fi and mobile data transfer begin to work simultaneously to speed up the process of downloading large files.

The smartphone has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. Of these 16GB, only 11.14GB is available to the user; the rest is occupied by the system. If necessary, you can expand the internal storage using microSD memory cards. In my case, I checked the 64GB card, the phone saw it without problems.

There is also OTG support, i.e. connecting external drives through a special adapter.

Camera
Nubia N1 Lite is equipped with two camera modules, a front 5 MP with interpolation up to 8 MP (with a maximum image resolution of 2160 by 3840) and a rear 8 MP with interpolation up to 13 MP (4864 by 2736). Both cameras have flashes, the front with one LED and the rear with two, but without the distinction between cool and warm tones. The camera is not the strongest point of this smartphone. If in the daytime, in good lighting, the pictures turn out even more or less normal, then at night, the picture is blurred and it is difficult to focus.

Examples of pictures taken with the main camera:

No HDR

In principle, the main camera does not shoot badly in macro mode (7-8 cm minimum distance to the object), but it is satisfactory in the daytime. The front selfie camera also takes normal pictures in good lighting, especially since there is a flash, which also makes its contribution.
As for video, it shoots it in a maximum resolution of 1280x720 pixels (HD) in 3gp format, 30 frames per second. The quality of the shooting leaves much to be desired, an example can be seen below.

Hardware and performance (hardware)
The smartphone runs on a not new, but well-known processor from MediaTek MTK6737 with 4 cores and a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The graphics are handled by the Mali-T720MP2 with a frequency of 650 MHz. This processor cannot be called super-efficient; it can be more classified as middle class or even below middle class. Installed in many budget phones since mid-2016. With the configuration of the device that we have, it will not be possible to play some demanding modern games. Normally, you can play something like Subway Surf, Asphalt 8 (at medium settings). The more demanding World of Tanks Blits runs only on low settings with an average number of frames of 35-38fps.

The phone boasts a good set of sensors:
- Accelerometer,
- Light sensor,
- Orientation sensor,
- Proximity sensor,
- Magnetometer (magnetic compass),

Autonomy
The device has a 3000 mAh lithium-polymer battery, or at least that’s what the manufacturer says. The battery is not removable, so it is impossible to estimate its dimensions and weight. In order to check what its real capacity is, I waited until the phone was completely discharged and turned off. After that, without turning on the phone, I charged it using the ZKEtech tester. As can be seen from the graph, the maximum charge current was 1.4A at 5V. Unfortunately, there is no support for fast charging, I tested it with a charger that supports MTK-PE (fast charging protocol for MediaTek processors). In total, the battery drained 2910 mAh in 3 hours and 6 minutes. Moreover, I would like to note that the phone takes up the main capacity (about 2300 mAh) in the first hour and a half of charging, and then the current gradually decreases. Well, from the test it is clear that the manufacturer did not lie and the device has a 2900-3000 mAh battery (taking into account losses during testing).

With active use: this is always on Internet (wi-fi), about 15 calls with a total duration of more than 30 minutes, some games and Internet surfing, a couple of dozen photos, the phone lasted about 24 hours, the screen worked for 7 hours in total. A decent result, with moderate use of the smartphone, I think it will last 1.5 days without problems.

The test to continue scrolling a video from YouTube in 720p resolution lasted exactly 7 hours. The screen brightness was set to 50% and the volume to maximum. Of course, the video clip is not so dynamic, but overall it will do for a general assessment. Watching two movies in 720p resolution should be enough

In the PCMark test at 50% brightness, the result is 7 hours 29 minutes.

Conclusion
Advantages:
+ Good screen with a large reserve of brightness, oleophobic coating and wide viewing angles, multi-touch for 10 touches.
+ Supports 3G/4G networks with all European frequencies. Reliable cell phone reception.
+ Independent slots for two SIM cards and a memory card. 2 SIM cards + memory card.
+ Autonomy, up to 7 hours of screen operation
+ European charging with normal plug,
+ Fast fingerprint scanner,
+ Adequate navigation (GPS),
+ Front camera flash

Flaws:
- Weight and dimensions,
- Mediocre main camera
- There is no fast charging,
- No protective layer on the display (scratch protection)
